"Till I Collapse" at Leica in Hamburg

Tino Pohlmann's photographs from the world of the Ironman, shot around Jan Frodeno. An evening at Leica Camera Hamburg where the panel talk was what stayed with us.

I. An evening on Große Theaterstraße

Leica Camera Hamburg invited us to the exhibition “Till I Collapse” by Tino Pohlmann, in their rooms on Große Theaterstraße. The store was full, the photo book was stacked across the shelves, and a time trial bike hung on the wall. It fitted together, because the pictures come out of triathlon.

II. Pictures from the world of the Ironman

The photographs were shot around Jan Frodeno, olympic champion and three-time world champion. What they show is not the finish line with the arms in the air. They are about exhaustion, willpower and the edge of what a body will do, caught with an immediacy and a closeness you rarely get to see. Exactly the distance that makes the difference in our work too: close enough that it stops being about the pose.

III. The panel talk

What stayed with us most was the panel talk, which kept us thinking for a while afterwards. Strong on substance, precisely moderated and genuinely worth the time, so not the usual twenty minutes of mutual reassurance before the drinks. A big thank you to the whole team at Leica Camera Hamburg for an evening that worked from start to finish, to Jens Eilers and to Jan Leve Carstensen.
